Finally, I was able to finish the application for Shirley Godfrey Scholarship and I sent it off to the committee advisor, Barbara Coulam tonight by email! The deadline is Feb. 7th, so I made it. Hopefully, all three of my references (Mrs. Lee, Joy and Carolyn) will also turn in their letters of references on time.

If I won this scholarship, then I will get $2,000 for our family. It would also be recognition of how hard I have worked for my school and family. So, I pray that I will hear from the scholarship committee soon with good news.

This is the personal statement I sent to the scholarship committee:

My name is Judy Hu, a resident in Placer County and currently I am pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Western Seminary in Sacramento. I started attending Western Seminary in Spring, 2003 with the goal of finishing the degree in four years, and currently I am twenty units shy from the total seventy-two units needed for graduation. Slowly but surely, I am making progress towards my goal to complete the program with Western Seminary and also towards my ultimate goal of becoming a licensed marriage and family therapist in California.

After experiencing the stillbirth of my first daughter, Grace at the end of 2002, I made the bold change in my direction and outlook in life and career. Instead of staying with my successful and stable job in marketing and sales, I decided to pursue a career in counseling because I felt I have much to offer in this area. After I started my education at Western Seminary, I discovered I was pregnant again with my second daughter, Faith which was great news to our family. Even though I knew that being a full time mother carrying full load of school work would be challenging, it has not deterred me from working hard on my education. In fact, I am a straight A student except for one class which I got a B in it.

I am also involved in the community as a counseling trainee at Bayside Church. Since I have taken required classes to meet the state requirements to start accumulating my 3,000 counseling hours necessary for state licensing, I started to see clients at Bayside Church Community Care Center as a therapist in training in April 2005. I thoroughly enjoy my role as a therapist in training there and being in action actually confirmed my future career goal and my passion in life.

My husband, Charles was a computer engineer, but he has since entered Western Seminary to pursue a degree in theology in January 2005. With both of us being full time students, we have to live on the savings we previously accumulated while we were working. However, it has been challenging financially for our family. We took out a line of credit in order to support the family financially while both of us are going to school. Our church also became a source of support financially for us. We live on a tight budget; however, we are learning much during the past few years and we are still learning continuously.

To receive this scholarship would mean a lot to me and to our family. Financially, it definitely would be a great help. If indeed, I have the honor to receive this scholarship; it would be recognition of how hard I have worked toward finishing this degree and my effort of being a full time mother and wife as well.
